This is a regular expression too. So what's so special about them?

A little bit of language theory

Chomsky-Hierarchy (Regular, context-free, context-sensitive, recursively enumerable languages)
Regular expressions can be represented by finite state automatons

Regular expressions

.: Any charactor
[abc], [a-z], [0-9]: Character classes
[^abc]: Negative character class
|: Alternative
(), (?:): Capturing group, non-capturing group
?, *, +: 0 or 1, 0 or more, 1 or more
{m,n}, {m,}: Between m and n, at least m
^, $: Begin and end of line/input anchors

(?:Un)greedy matching

Regular expressions are greedy bastards
Usually the longest input that can be matched is matched
Ungreedy matching matches the shortest possible input

Similar to greedy matching
Does not backtrack
Performance gains with non-matching input
